Swiss guitarist Roberto Pianca's group Sub Rosa gathers together some of the finest young jazz musicians on the swiss and international scene. The music is contemporary Jazz, reflecting many influences from modern music. Dealing with complexity in terms of composition as well as freedom within improvisation, the music might have a strong impact on an audience that loves listening to a contrast created between virtuosic rhythmical patterns and aerial atmospheres, as well as a consistent musicality and interaction coming individually from all five members of the band. Having played together for a long time in different combinations, these musicians know each other very well but have constant need of searching adventurous paths and unknown landscapes in the music, secret places for the music to happen. In fact, not for nothing, the Latin phrase sub rosa was picked on purpose for the first album title and name for the band, it actually means "under the rose", and is used in English to denote secrecy or confidentiality.
“Mono no aware”, literally "the pathos of things" is the second album of the band and will be released in February 2021 by the Italian independent label Honolulu Records.
Also translated as "an empathy toward things", or "a sensitivity to ephemera", “Mono no aware” is a Japanese term for the transience of things, a bittersweet feeling of having been witness to something that is going to finish or change, as in music the essence of improvisation.
